Barre Opera House: Entertainment Smorgasbord

With a winter schedule to satisfy every taste, the Barre Opera House continues to serve area residents and visitors after more than 100 years.

One of the finest venues in Vermont and the focal point for area entertainment at the turn of the 20th century, the opera house was closed in 1944 and sat idle for decades. It was in danger of destruction until a citizens group launched a restoration program in the 1970s. Now in the 21st century, it has again risen to prominence among Vermont venues.

Performing on the stage that once hosted Helen Keller and John Philip Sousa, December's lineup includes Holiday plays and concerts. February brings Eileen Ivers, a veteran Irish and Celtic style fiddler. Her band combines African and Latin percussion with her fiddle, funky bass, keyboards, plus blues harmonica.

Two performances of "HMS Pinafore" highlight the late February offerings. The Palace Professional Players return after last year's wonderful "Pirate of Penzance" with another Gilbert & Sullivan classic. Fully staged and costumed with orchestra.
