BENNINGTON, Vt. - Vermont’s tallest structure, the Bennington Battle Monument opens to the public for educational exploration on Saturday, April 14.
Dedicated and opened to the public on August 19, 1891 the 306-foot Monument, a Vermont State Owned Historic Site, was built to commemorate the August 16, 1777 Battle of Bennington, a pivotal battle in the American War for Independence that led to General Burgoyne’s surrender in Saratoga on October 17, the turning point of the Revolution.
Scenic vistas of Vermont, Massachusetts and New York are seen from the observation level, accessible by elevator. Admission to the Monument is $3 for adults; $1 for children ages six through 14. Children under six as well as scheduled school groups are free to visit. Tickets can be purchased in the gift shop, where a fine selection of Monument merchandise is available as well as other Vermont specialty gifts.
The Monument is open daily until October 31. Events for the season include: the annual Climb of Your Life sponsored by the American Lung Association on May 19; the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4 and on July 14, the steps inside the Monument will be open for guided tours. Bennington Battle Day will be celebrated August 18-19 complete with cannons and re-enactors; the Battle Day 5k road race and children’s fun run is Saturday, August 18. Mark your calendar for September 20 as British Actor Howard Burnham will bring General John Burgoyne back to life and back to Bennington for an informative and entertaining evening.
